1927
Our church began as a mission of the First Methodist Church. The Reverend W.M. Bunts was the pastor at that time, and he began holding services in an old store building that was located a short distance from our present church.
1935
We officially became “West Galax Methodist Church.” The old building was enlarged, and by some time later it became necessary to purchase land for a larger building.
1943
A one-room structure, thirty feet by forty feet, was erected. This building was soon outgrown, and in the early part of the 1950s, we needed to expand again. The Reverend J.F. Akers held a revival for us that lasted more that three weeks and resulted in about one hundred new conversions. This spiritual awakening make it necessary to start work on the brick building that we still enjoy. The cost was $62,000.
1995
As our church continued to grow, in 1995 we completely remodeled to sanctuary, added two restrooms on the upper level, and remodeled two downstairs Sunday School rooms and restroom. We have since purchased an adjacent field that has been graded and filled in to make a playground and parking lot.
2015
We adopted a new identity statement, “A family of love transformed by grace”, to communicate who we are and our Christian faith to the community.
Today
Our church continues to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to invite followers of Jesus to take the next step in their faith. Our church has been blessed to produce some outstanding Christian workers, including several ordained ministers.
